Textiles Shibori Dyeing Workshop

On the 2nd of May I am going to be doing textiles Shibori dyeing workshop at Ideas Block in Vilnius, Lithuania.

You can register for this workshop by sending a message to Ideas Block LT.

Shibori is a traditional Japanese textiles dyeing technique, where by folding, tying, stitching, twisting, compressing a fabric, patterns are created.

During the workshop, while enjoying a cup of tea, we will talk about a variety of textiles dyeing techniques and dyes, answer the questions you might have, and, most importantly, everyone will get a chance to experiment with Shibori dyeing and create something unique.

Bring a white (or coloured) t-shirt, skirt, pillowcase, or just any fabric you wis to dye. Everything that is made from natural fibre is good for dyeing – COTTON or LINEN are the best (synthetic fabrics do not dye).

We will dye all the white fabrics and other colours will be bleached. We recommend to bring two types of fabrics, just in case one is not suitable for dyeing, you will still have another try.

All the dyes and tools needed will be provided.

Workshop duration: 1.5 – 2 hours

Fee: 10 €

Workshop will be held in LIthuanian and/or English (depending on the requirements of the participants).

Language – Interdisciplinary Art Exhibition in Collaboration with Roberto Becerra

We still have our first exhibition, called Language, running at the new creative space we opened just a few weeks ago – Ideas Block LT, in Vilnius, Lithuania. Showing from Feb 9 to March 9, 2017. Work in collaboration with Roberto Becerra.

About the exhibition

Language is energy. Through voice and language energy is transferred. With different purposes is this energy expressed, molded and conveyed. From a certain perspective, language is only energy what we utter and use it to communicate with others.

Such energy reaches our sensorial input, and its processed as mere impulses, in a way loosing all meaning or sense, until it is interpreted, decoded or understood by the brain structures trained in a set of sound patterns.

Language is nature. It is a natural treat of organisms, and it evolves to its fullest potential, restrained only by the characteristics of the vehicle that carries it. In this vein, language is a shared feature that fulfills the same objective regardless of the species or, in the case of humans, national/cultural tongue.

Information is shared, communication is achieved, messages are transmitted, and the medium is this energy transfer embedded in language and vocal expressions.

Language is flow. This transmission of information is happening in a stream of energy that is emitted and received.

In this installation theses ideas are hinted by means of a long, cylinder-like shape, from floor to ceiling, in the centre of the gallery, made from fabric, dyed producing organic patterns, with tree sections in the base, and light moving inside as a sort of up and downwards flow.

To enhance the concept of the energy content in the voice and language, the sculpture picks up the sound of its surroundings, which in the context of the installation and gallery is made up of people’s voices. The audio is accumulated, looped and played back to the audience, so after time of operating and when excited by the audience’s voices, the installation starts to resonate, feed back on itself and pulsate.

Origin. New Collection Development

‘Origin’ is the name for my latest collection of textile products. It not only represents my deep interest in nature and its composition, patterns, colours and inseparable connection with man-made structures, but also explores the ideas of sustainability in textiles.

The collection features linen fabrics and woollen threads dyed with plant-based dyes. The colours and patterns created in the dyeing process are merged with embroidery. The hand stitched patterns are based on the structures found in nature, either looking from far or getting into detail through the microscopic images. See my Pinterest board for the inspiration behind the drawings.

Follow the development and find out more details on the type of products you might find in the collection on Instagram.

In the images bellow you can see the process of the project so far:

About the process and the sustainability side

The fabrics and threads I am using for this collection are dyed using chokeberries, ashberries, hawberries, leaves, onion peel and wood bark. For the fibres to bind with these natural substances alum is used.

What I like about using natural dyes is the ease of modifying the tones and how the colours stay flexible throughout their life cycle by reacting to the sun, rain or other conditions. I also enjoy exploring the nature looking for plants and seeing the different results they create on fabrics. The overall process is very appealing, however it comes with its challenges and side effects.

Even though I previously worked with natural dyes, I still find it quite difficult to get hold on brighter tones. Also this process requires a lot of time and large amounts of plant dyestuff to produce colours. And one more thing, in order for the colour to actually bind with the fibre it needs some sort of chemical mordant (such as alum). So when you put all of these things together, dyeing with natural dyes doesn’t seem as sustainable as it might seem from the beginning, especially if applied on an industrial scale.

So if this isn’t the best way to colour the fabrics we use for clothing or decorating our homes, what is it? I am following the latest trends in the search for more sustainable ways and so far the most promising seems to be bacteria-based dyes. Hopefully soon this is going to revolutionise the whole textiles industry.

Event at the Abandoned VIII Fort in Kaunas, Lithuania

Lithuania is full of abandoned spaces. Often these beautiful buildings, left to decay, hold a great potential for cultural and other purposes, yet to be discovered. I was happy to participate in an event held in one of these abandoned spaces in Kaunas, reviving and changing the face of the VIII Fort underground building. The event was organised by Kaunas Fortress Association and Šilainiai Project.

Here I presented my earlier works from Layers of Light interior textiles collection. Just this time it was placed in a completely different surrounding from that of the original purpose. It was an experiment of bringing fragile and delicate pieces into a dark monumental space of the VIII Fort.

The artworks explore transparency, layers and reflections of patterns and light. Fabrics of different thickness, transparent and opaque plastics are combined with screen printing, embroidery and laser cutting techniques to create complex structures.

The collection, inspired by folk ornaments, placed in the old fort building gained new meanings and links with history and culture.

My partner, Roberto Becerra, who is a multimedia and sound artist, also participated in this event, bringing life to the abandoned space using sounds and light. Read more about his work here, and listen to the sounds of his performance here.

To see more images from this event and the works by other artists, please visit I/O Facebook page, where we share our collaborative work with Roberto Becerra. To find out about future events, please follow my Facebook and Instagram accounts.
